Introduction

The two Vyatta particularities that we notice are that this is an operating system entirely dedicated to routing, and that this a free and open source software, based on the Linux kernel.

This is here where the Vyatta advantage is: because every firm, especially for little firms, wants to get lost as less money as possible in their network infrastructure, the Vyatta system is free, consequently a lot of money can be saved. Instead of buying a Cisco Router, having their technicians certified in Cisco etc… why don’t they replace their router by a Vyatta box ? In addition, Vyatta is open source, then it is very reliable because the errors are corrected fastly and it permits a great flexibility : Could we be able to play Tetris on a Cisco Router which costs 2000€ ?

Before we begin to study the system, we have to tell on which version of Vyatta this document is based on.

This document is based on the 0.5 build 1579 version (6 avril 2006) of the system.

This system still is in beta version. The 1.0 final version with all advanced functionalities will be released on summer 2006 and will have nearly all functionalities of a Cisco router.

In this document, I will, first of all, show you how to install and boot Vyatta, the basic methods and commands to know to get started with this system and finally, to conclude, I will show you the advanced networking functionalities which are present on the Vyatta system.
