1 Remember the SLI…

1.1 The principle

The name “SLI”, which is the acronym of “Scalable Link Interface”, shows already a specificity that this new technology brings.

Indeed, NVIDIA benefits from the release of the port PCI-Express in 16x, which generally is 2, available on the new motherboards to reveal the SLI.
It consists in fact to be able to connect by a bridge 2 graphics cards NVIDIA in the same type and of the same bios in order to connect them on these ports PCI-Express.

1.2 Technical aspect

For this technology, NVIDIA had the excellent idea to use 3 modes: modes Compatibility, AFR and SFR.

1.2.1 The Compatibility mode

This mode of use is that by default. Indeed, if for example, by fault of means, we have only one graphic card, this mode will be then the best suitable one. It thus allows the management of video flow that by only one graphics card.

1.2.2 Mode AFR

In this mode, the workload is distributed on the 2 graphics cards; what a priori should produce a better fluidity of the pictures.

However, this mode can't be so effective if for example, a scene of a play is charged than the preceding one a certain latency can then be made feel.

However, in the absolute, latency is less all the same than with a system having only one card.

1.2.3 Mode SFR

In this mode, each card treats only part of the picture: one deals with the part the top and the other that of bottom. This in order to try to balance the load of treatment as well as possible enters the 2 cards.

However, this mode has all the same disadvantages such as the fact that there is a communication between the 2 cards much more important what limits acceleration offered!

1.3 Some results

Thus, we could see that these modes have each one their advantages but also their disadvantages. When technology SLI is used, one should not forget only it doesn't double the video memory available, but as well as possible distributed the workload in order to have better performances.

Here a table showing a comparison between the performances of the SLI and various charts NVIDIA on Doom 3, Halation and 3DMark05:
