2 And now the Quad SLI!

2.1 A new revolution

The 1st question which one can be posed is of course: Quad SLI graphics = 4 cards?

So, the answer is no! Indeed, it's in fact 2 Bi-GPU cards graphics which will decorate the future machines equipped with the Quad SLI technology . When NVIDIA announced for the 1st time this new technology, it was based on of GeForce 7800 only reserved GTX with LED but which was very quickly replaced by of GeForce 7900 removing exclusiveness for LED then.

2.2 Interconnection of the GPU

We saw at the time of the presentation of technology SLI, that the GPU of each of the 2 graphics cards was to be connected by a bridge.
It's a little the same principle for Quad SLI, however, each card having 2 GPU, they are first of all interconnected between them then each GPU of a card is connected to a GPU of the 2nd card.

2.3 Advantages compared to the SLI

We could observe that the SLI could use several modes of returned: AFR and SFR.
Of course, Quad SLI also uses these 2 modes and guard the principle of distribution of load but this time Ci on the 4 GPUs.
However, one 3rd mode makes its appearance with Quad SLI: the AFR of SFR!

2.3.1 Mode SFR

In this mode where the picture is cut into 2 so that each GPU deals with part, it will be about the same principle for Quad SLI.
Indeed, the picture will be divided dynamic into 4; each GPU dealing with each divided picture.

2.3.2 Mode AFR

Just as mode SFR, the same principle is taken again: each GPU takes care of an picture on 4.

2.3.3 Mode AFR of SFR

In this mode, GPUs work per pair on an picture on 2 in SFR. Thus, during the calculation of an picture, 2 GPUs will treat it then will be gathered by the principal GPU and the following picture will then be treated by the 2 other GPUs.

It's incontestably, the best mode in order to as well as possible exploit the capacities which can bring Quad SLI!

2.4 Some tests

- One 1st test on Doom 3:

SLI5.jpg

For this test, the picture is rather dark but is not in no case because of the graphics card.
Here, Quad SLI clearly showed a profit of perfomance.

- One 2nd test on FEAR:

This game, requiring much more resources than Doom 3 showed very good performances with the height of our waitings starting from a resolution in 1900x1200 until 2560x1600.
